Transforming Sub-Tropical Horticulture in Himachal Pradesh

Empowering 20,000+ farm households through irrigation, horticulture development, and value addition.

About Us

Welcome to HPSHIVA

Himachal Pradesh is one of the smaller states in India being 17th in terms of size and 21st in terms of population. Around 50% of its area is mountains and less than 10% area is under cultivation. More than 90% of the population resides in rural area and about 62% of population is engaged in agriculture activities. The total contribution of agriculture-horticulture sector to state’s gross value is less than 15%.

Himachal Pradesh Subtropical Horticulture, Irrigation & Value Addition (HPSHIVA) project, financed by the Government of Himachal Pradesh and Asian Development Bank, has been conceived to harness the potential of horticulture in the subtropical climate area of the state. The migration of youth population, abandoning of agricultural activities, inefficient utilization of irrigation potential and need for crop diversification (Apple alone comprises 79% of state’s fruit production) has necessitated a project like HPSHIVA.

Our Services

Enhancing Income & Employment

HPSHIVA is committed to increasing farmers’ income by improving productivity, promoting value addition, and strengthening market linkages. The project also focuses on creating new rural employment opportunities, helping to boost the local economy and improve the overall standard of living in farming communities.

Empowering Women & Youth

HPSHIVA actively supports women by organizing and empowering them through self-help groups, enabling their participation in horticultural activities. Value Addition & Processing

To reduce post-harvest losses and increase profitability, HPSHIVA is setting up pack houses, grading units, and cold storage facilities. Farmers are trained in food processing techniques that enable them to diversify into products like juices, jams, and pickles. By encouraging the formation of Farmer.

Irrigation Facilities

HPSHIVA supports the installation of drip and sprinkler irrigation systems to ensure efficient water use and improve crop productivity. The project also focuses on the construction of water storage tanks and small reservoirs to provide a reliable water supply for horticultural activities throughout the year.

Fruit & Vegetable Production

HPSHIVA promotes the cultivation of sub-tropical fruits such as mango, guava, pomegranate, citrus, and litchi. To support farmers, the project provides high-quality planting material, ensuring better productivity and improved fruit quality across the region.

What our Farmers say

"Earlier, I used to face heavy crop losses due to unseasonal rain. With the SHIVA project’s real-time weather updates and advisory, I know exactly when to sow and irrigate my crops. My wheat production has gone up by 30% this year!"

Ramesh Kumar

(Bilaspur District)

"Before SHIVA, I was completely dependent on local market rates. Now, I get daily price updates and can decide when and where to sell my produce for the best price. This has increased my income and reduced middlemen exploitation."

Suman Devi

(Mandi District)

"The SHIVA project team trained us in organic farming techniques and provided high-quality seeds. My vegetables are now in demand in nearby cities, and buyers directly contact me through the SHIVA platform."

Rajesh Thakur

(Kangra District)

"We have a group of farmers connected through SHIVA. It helps us share experiences, learn new techniques, and buy inputs together at a lower cost. It’s not just technology – it feels like a farming community."
